Appless vs App-Based EV Charging: Which Is Better for Drivers?

Should drivers need an app to charge at your site? A plain comparison of app-based and appless charging, and why most charger owners end up offering both.

The difference in one line

With app-based charging, the driver installs the charging company's app, creates an account and pays through it. With appless charging, the driver scans a QR code on the charger and starts straight away, paying with something they already have.

How app-based charging works

  1. Download the charging company's app.
  2. Create an account and verify a phone number or email.
  3. Add a card or load a wallet.
  4. Find the charger in the app and start the session.

For a driver who charges at the same network every week, this is fine. The app remembers them, shows nearby chargers and keeps a history.

How appless charging works

Appless charging takes the driver from the charger to a session in one step. Common forms are a QR code that opens a web page, a tap card, and a QR code that opens a chat. With Savekar, the QR code opens WhatsApp:

  1. Scan the QR code on the charger. WhatsApp opens.
  2. Pay for the session by UPI, with any UPI app.
  3. Watch units and cost in the chat while the car charges.
  4. Get the receipt in the same chat. If the session stops early, the unused amount is refunded automatically.

Side by side

For a first-time driver

Appless wins clearly. Every extra step, from the download to the wallet top-up, is a point where a driver gives up and drives on. A driver at a hotel, a highway stop or a shop may never visit again, so asking them to install an app for one session costs you that session.

For a regular driver

An app can work well, but so can a tap card or a saved WhatsApp chat. Regulars mostly want speed, which a card gives them with no phone at all.

For the charger owner

An app of your own costs money to build and maintain, and drivers must still find it. Appless charging works from day one. The two are not exclusive: through OCPI roaming, drivers who prefer their own app can still use your charger from it.

Why WhatsApp works well in India

Almost every smartphone in India already has WhatsApp and a UPI app. Building on those two means there is nothing new to install and no new payment method to learn. The chat also gives the driver one place for live updates, the receipt and help, which an AI assistant can answer at any hour.

What most owners do

  • Appless charging on WhatsApp for anyone passing by.
  • Tap cards for staff, residents and regulars.
  • Roaming, so drivers on partner apps can find and use the charger.
